The new top executive of the Timberwolves also will select the next head coach.
And if he doesn’t want Kevin McHale to coach the team next year, the new hire will have the choice of selecting someone else.
These surprising words came out of Wolves owner Glen Taylor’s mouth after repeating several times that if McHale wants to coach the team next year, the job is his.
“… If I’m going to have a person in charge of basketball operations, I want that person to be comfortable with who is going to coach here,” Taylor said.
Owner Glen Taylor, who didn’t attend Wednesday’s game, has said he expects McHale to come back and anticipates an announcement on that and the front-office job within the next two weeks.
McHale said his first order of business is to fix his deck and that he plans to go up to his cabin early next week.
“If I don’t come back, I’ll miss theguys; I really will,” he said. “Because they really are a quality group of guys.”
Forward Ryan Gomes said there was nothing in McHale’s postgame remarks to the team to indicate which way he’s leaning.
“No sense at all,” Gomes said. “My opinion is I don’t think he knows yet.”
McHale has refused to say whether he wants to coach again or not, but he did say before Wednesday’s game that there’s no such thing as a certain future in the NBA.
“I told our guys, ‘Look, in this league, if you think just because someone says he’s going next year that it’s going to be stable, you’re nuts,'” McHale said.
