Perhaps one of the top track athletes to come out of the United States since Maurice Greene, Tyson Gay looks to establish dominance as he heads for his second go-round at the Summer Olympics in London. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the twenty-nine year old out of Lexington, Kentucky did not perform like the Tyson Gay we now know, finishing 5th in the 100 meter semi-final and being disqualified in the 4×100 relay, leaving Beijing without a single medal. Determined to show why he is one of the most sought after sprinters in the United States today, Tyson Gay will make his return to the Olympics to compete in the same two events that did not go well during his debut Olympic run.
Despite his dismal performance in the 2008 Summer Olympics, Tyson Gay has put together a well-decorated career in the United States and around the world. Tyson Gay’s competition record dates back to the 2005 World Championships in Athletics, held in Finland, where he ran a 20.34. That same year, Gay finished first in the same event with a time of 19.96 at the IAAF World Athletics Final in Monaco. Throughout the years, Gay continued to compete in the IAAF World Athletic competition as well as the World Championships in Athletics racking up 7 first place finishes in events such as the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m.
During various meets around the world, Tyson Gay has set impressive personal best times. During the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Gay recorded a 60m indoor sprint time of 6.55s. Four years later during the Adidas Grand Prix in New York, Gay set his 200m personal best at 19.58 and four months later in Shanghai, China at the Shanghai Grand Prix, he set his 100m best at 9.69, which stands as the 100m record in the United States and the former world record before it was broken by Usain Bolt’s 9.58 time. Other personal bests Tyson Gay has set include his 200m straight time of 19.41 and his 400m personal best of 44.89.
Both Tyson Gay and Usain Bolt are returning to the Summer Olympics this year and will definitely put on a show as both men look to put forth the best 100m time of the competition. Bolt, who will prove to be major competition for Tyson Gay, looks to run a seemingly impossible 9.40 in the 100m sprint this summer but don’t count out Tyson Gay who will look to take advantage of every opportunity as he heads to London to go for gold.
