How is that going to read in America’s papers today: Joseph Addai’s touchdown pass to Reggie Wayne leads the Indianapolis Colts to an 18-14 victory . . .
Of course, this didn’t come as a complete surprise to a Mr. Charles Perridon, who was Addai’s high school football coach in Houston and happened to be in attendance Sunday. Addai was Perridon’s quarterback for two years, leading an offense that called for a 50-50 pass-run split.
“I’ve always wondered why they didn’t run that play sooner,” Perridon said after the game.
Well, actually, they have, although Addai has never before been credited with an actual pass attempt. He underthrew Wayne in a 2006 game against Denver, but Wayne was called for pass interference as he broke up the sure interception. That same year, Addai was sacked before he could throw a pass against Jacksonville.
Lifetime, then, he is 1-for-1 with one touchdown.
Beat that, Mr. Laser Rocket Arm.
RUN DEFENSE: B
Yeah, they got gashed once, got gashed big time, a 64-yard tackle-breaking run up the middle by Frank Gore. But give this group credit: They closed ranks thereafter, allowing just 49 yards on the ground on 17 carries. Don’t look now, but the Colts are brandishing one of the best defenses in the NFL. The defensive line hasn’t missed a beat since Ed Johnson’s departure, getting huge performances from Daniel Muir and Antonio Johnson. Seemed like Clint Session and Antoine Bethea were everywhere, too. This is one of the best tackling secondaries the Colts have had in a very long time.
