Good News From Down On The Cardinals Farm

untitled

Tim Cooney gets the no decision… errr… start tonight for the Cardinals versus the Atlanta Braves.

And if you’re like me, you’re wondering things like ‘is Cooney now the regular 5th starter’ or ‘what the heck is going on with Jaime and Marco’.

Turns out, there’s good news down on the farm:

Marco Gonzales (via VEB)

Gonzales threw 71 pitches, and 51 for strikes, in his fourth rehab appearance (Note: On WED night). In 11 1/3 IP he has 10 Ks and no walks, and no earned runs, though two unearned did score against him in his second start for Palm Beach. After struggling a bit in six starts for Memphis to start the year, Gonzales had been shelved since 5/19 with a shoulder impingement before his current rehab process. If he can return to AAA and pitch well, he could bolster the big league club’s rotation or bullpen.

That sounds pretty good, right? It’s been a while since we’ve seen Gonzales with the big club. He was 4-2 in 2014 with 31 strikouts in 34.2 innings.

And Jaime? Turns out that ‘minor’ tweak he felt rounding 3rd base has been a bit more costly than the Cardinals led us to believe. It’s now been exactly 1 month since we’ve seen Garcia on the mound for the Birds (6/24 vs Miami).

But wait… he actually is playing. And playing well!

Jaime Garcia (via CBS Sports)

Cardinals rehabbing starter Jaime Garcia certainly enjoyed an encouraging outing Thursday for Class A Peoria. He threw 58 pitches and hurled hitless ball for five innings.

Ok. Alright. Looks like things are trending in the right direction for 2 pitchers that the Cardinals would love to have be contributors down the stretch this season.

See, now don’t you feel much better about the Pirates trading for Cardinals killer Aramis Ramirez?
