GOODBYE ALY! DON’T BE A STRANGER!

As most of you know, after two years of managing and publishing the Net Set, Aly Edge has moved on to other projects, although we may still hear from her occasionally as a “Guest Contributor.” Tonight I thought we’d reminisce about Aly and give her a proper send off.

I really don’t know Aly very well as a person (actually, I’ve never met her or even talked to her except by email), but I am familiar with her writing and her passion for the sport of Volleyball.  And really, that’s all that matters here tonight, because Aly certainly did her share – and more – to grow the game.

Aly attended Western Washington University (go Vikings), an NCAA Division II university of 15,000 or so students in Bellingham, Washington. Bellingham is approximately 90 miles north of Seattle, 50 miles southeast of Vancouver, and about 20 miles from the Canadian – USA border. Her major field was – and is – linguistics and she also has a serious interest in the fields of screenwriting and filmmaking.

She became the “PA Voice” for the Volleyball Vikings in her second year at Western Washington, and, for four years, used the job as an opportunity to learn all about the indoor game of Volleyball. She graduated from Western Washington in 2010, but still remains a devoted fan of the Vikings women’s Volleyball.

Aly launched the Net Set in August of 2012 shortly after the London Olympics. Although she likes to “toil in obscurity” (her words, not mine) the Net Set nonetheless brought her to the forefront of college Volleyball journalism. Her detailed and precise analyses of college Volleyball were truly magnificent and at times bordered on genius.  We will miss these pieces, although I personally hope she continues them next year.

In closing, then, on behalf of the entire Net Set and Volleyball communities, I want to give Aly a round of applause and wish her Godspeed in all her endeavors.  And, not surprisingly, a song comes to mind – “Candle in the Wind” by Elton John.

“And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did.”

Aly Edge, Good Luck, Good Fortune, and Best Wishes from all of us!

PLEASE, LET’S KEEP GROWING VOLLEYBALL TOGETHER!
