Goodbye, Wizard

Goodbye, WizardAnd now, more sad news. Not Ohio State related, but a huge loss to the world of college sports.

John Wooden has passed away at the age of 99. As you remember, he was hospitalized for dehydration yesterday.

On the one occasion that I had to meet him, what I thought would be a simple “Coach, I wanted to say thank you for your work” turned into a 5 minute conversation as he asked about my role at the University where he was watching a game. Even in that brief moment, his grace and kindness, as well as his passion for the development of young adults were obvious.

Among my favorite Wooden quotes-

  • Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.
  • Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.
  • Consider the rights of others before your own feelings, and the feelings of others before your own rights.
  • Young people need models, not critics.
  • Sports do not build character. They reveal it.
  • You cannot live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.

Thanks, Coach. Godspeed.

Goodbye, Wizard
