The greatest victories over the Patriots

For the past 15 contests we’ve all heard about “The Streak” and the constant losing to the Patriots.  I’m a believer that winning is a culture and you need to learn how to win.  With that being said, we thought here at Buffalo Wins, that it would serve the fans to remember some of the best wins the Bills have had in their history over the Patriots.  Starting with the most recent, here are the top five wins in Bills history over the Patriots.

9/7/2003: The last win.  Opening day in Orchard Park and the Bills had just picked up Lawyer Milloy a few days prior.  The Bills jumped all over the Patriots in their 31-0 victory. The game included a pair of Travis Henry rushing touchdowns and is mostly remembered as the day Sam Adams rumbled, bumbled and stumbled his way into the end zone after an interception. Brady went 14-28 for 123 yards and 4 INTs.  Those were the days….

9/11/1994: Shootout at Foxboro.  Over 900 yards in total offense between both teams, as the Bills won a triller, 35-31. Jim Kelly was the Bills’ MVP on this day as he passed for 4 TDs and 328 yards, while Drew Bledsoe countered with 380 yards and 3TDs.  This was where my official hatred of Ben Coates began. The Patriots’ tight end caught 9 balls for 124 yards and a score, which seemed to become the norm for him against the Bills (Note: Coates caught 56 passes and 9 touchdowns for his career against Buffalo). The Bills ended up winning the shootout with a Steve Christie field goal after the Patriots scored two 4th quarter touchdowns to tie it.  To go with Kelly’s 300 yards passing, Reed and Thurman both went over 100 yards.  Those were the days….

10/26/1980: On the way to a division title.  Most fans know (or may not know) that the 1970s were not kind to the Buffalo Bills. However, for a 1980 October game, this match-up mattered. The Bills came out with a 31-13 win that brought the team to 6-2 and led the way to the Bills taking the division. The Bills had 50 total rushing attempts to the Patriots 17, with Joe Cribbs being the catalyst with 118 yards. Those were the days…

9/16/1973: OJ sets the single game record.  1973 was the year of #32. OJ went on to get over 2,000-yards and the Patriots accounted for almost 25% of those yards.  This was the first of two 200-yard games against the Patriots, as OJ set a single game record with 250 yards rushing on 29 carries and 2 TDs.  If that wasn’t enough rushing for you old schoolers, Larry Watkins added an additional 105 yards on 18 carries for two more scores.  All told, the Bills put up 360 rushing yards on the Patriots and threw the ball just 12 times for 99 yards.  Those were the days…

12/20/1964.  Victory in the snow at Fenway.  The division title was on the line, as the Bills were 11-2 and the Boston Patriots were 10-2-1. Weather didn’t seem to play too much of a role in game planning when it came to the Bills arerial game, as Jack Kemp were 12-24 with 286 yards, 1TD and 3INTs, while the Patriots Babe Parilli went 19-39 for 294, 2TDs and 2INTs.  The Patriots mostly contained Cookie Gilchrist and Wray Carlton, but Bills wide receivers, Elbert Dubenion and Glenn Bass, both went for over 100 yards.  Kemp also had two rushing touchdowns as the Bills won 24-14, which sent the Bills to the AFL Championship game.  Those were the days….

9/25/2011:  Victory at the Ralph?  It’d be a hell of a day!
