Jordy Nelson is going to stay a Green Bay Packer. The 29-year-old receiver signed a four-year, $39 million extension. The new contract includes $14.2 million guaranteed and $11.5 million signing bonus.
It is a good contract that keeps Nelson with the Packers through 2018. He has earned this deal.
Nelson has been one of Aaron Rodgers’ biggest weapons over the last several years. He had a breakout season in 2011 with 68 catches for 1,263 yards and 15 touchdowns. He missed four games in 2012 and rebounded in 2013. In 2013, he came back strong with 85 catches for 1,314 yards and eight touchdowns.
Ted Thompson is widely regarded as one of the best general managers in the NFL. He doesn’t give contract extensions unless you have shown something. Nelson has shown that he has plenty of good years left in him and Thompson has rewarded him for his production. Thompson let Greg Jennings walk in free agency last season. Jennings struggled with the Vikings last season.
Clearly, Thompson saw something in Nelson that he didn’t see in Jennings when his deal was up.
Nelson and Rodgers have excellent chemistry together and I have no doubt that Jordy will have another great season.
The only thing that Thompson has to do keep this offense in tact is to sign Randall Cobb to an extension. He is in the last year of his rookie deal and the Packers need to resign him.
Nelson has proven to be a key part of the Packers. With his new contract, the future is bright for both sides.
