The financial terms haven’t been officially released, but it is believed to be in the mid $30 million range. The deal also includes two option years. The contract will not start until the 2017 season.
This deal is similar to the contract Starling Marte signed prior to the 2014 season and Andrew McCutchen signed prior to the 2012 season. The Pirates like to lock-up players so both parties can avoid arbitration. This deal gives Gregory Polanco a lot financial security and gives the Pirates cost control of their dynamic outfielder for the foreseeable future.
The Pirates are betting that Gregory Polanco is way more the player he was in the second half of last season when he hit .284/.347/.383 from July onward. This comes after Polanco reached base three times in Opening Day.
The Pirates now have their current outfield locked up for a long time as Andrew McCutchen is still under contract until after 2018 season and Starling Marte is locked up until after 2021.
