Hackenberg among Sporting News top 50 players in 2015

The Sporting News put out a list of the top 50 players in college football for the 2015 season. There are a ton of OhioState players on the list (although Braxton Miller is noticeably absent), and just one Penn State player. Quarterback Christian Hackenberg checks in at No. 47 on the list.

Here’s what The Sporting News says about Hackenberg;

On numbers alone, Hackenberg took a significant step back in his sophomore season. But nothing could be further from the truth. The Penn State line was young, inexperienced and overwhelmed — and Hackenberg was getting beaten up week after week with little help from skill players on the outside. His TD/INT ratio was bad (12/15), but not another player in college football can make the throws Hackenberg can.

I am expecting a bit of a bounce back from Hackenberg in 2015, and that is based largely on the idea the offensive line improves up front. With a couple of upper-classmen transfers added to the mix, I believe the offensive line has an opportunity to be one of the most improved units on the team this coming season, and that should see improved play from the running game as well as Hackenberg.

The list ranks Ohio State quarterbacks Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Buckeyes running back Ezekiel Elliott is No. 5 and defensive end Joey Bosa is No. 7. Michigan State defensive end Shilique Calhoun (No. 13) and quarterback Connor Cook (No. 23), Buckeyes linebacker Darron Lee (No. 39), defensive end Adolphus Washington (No. 42) and offensive tackle Taylor Decker (No. 46) are all representing the Big Ten in the top 50 appearing on this list as well.
