Mike Sielski at the Wall Street Journal has a great piece on Carl Hagelin going from a college hockey hero at the University of Michigan to a Rangers rookie…
“While it might be a bit much to say Hagelin was a cult hero during his time there, the term isn’t too far off the mark. Consider: During the 2009-10 season, Rob Eckert—a Michigan student and fervid hockey fan—mentioned to his mother, Nancy, that he’d love to fly a giant Swedish flag at home games to pay respect to Hagelin’s heritage. So Nancy Eckert sewed one and gave it to Rob for Christmas, and it soon became a fixture at Yost Ice Arena.”
Sielski adds that students who attended Michigan games also honored Hagelin by creating a chant that parodied the Muppets’ Swedish Chef character. (“It went ‘Bork! Bork! Bork!'” Chiles said.)
Here’s a pretty cool video on Hagelin and the fans during his time at Michigan…
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2N6w-JinB4&w=450&h=315]…the Bork! chant is absolutely classic.
…if Hagelin continues the way he’s going now, the cult following he’ll have in New York will dwarf the one from Michigan.
