Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Mudville – mighty Casey has struck out.
~ Casey at the Bat by Ernest Lawrence Thayer
Plenty of DC sports fans feel like mud this morning. Though I ceased to be a baseball fan long ago, I feel badly for them. The Nationals lost the NLDS to the St. Louis Cardinals 9-7 last night. Can't beat the Cards. Can't beat the Rams. /groans
No more joy at seeing two Washington sports teams on HDTV on the same Sunday in October like a real sports town. (Yeah, that's a dig at Wilbon.) Too bad. So sad. Things were getting very interesting around here.
Washington is still a Redskins town. The 'Skins won more titles than any other sports team representing DC. I'm not counting soccer in that count. Demographic trends favor soccer's future. Futbol will threaten football dominance in a generation or so. For now, it's still football.
The next team to win a championship will challenge the Redskins' hold on fan mindshare – and wallet share. Until then, it's Hail to the Redskins, Rock the Red, and … whatever it is we say about the Wizards.
Ugh. RT @swhyno: Since @espnmag did D.C. super-edition, #RG3 got concussed, Wall hurt his knee, #Caps still not playing & #Nats imploded.
