- The Story: Jarrod Washburn says he is open to signing with the Angels as a free agent this off-season. The Monkey Says: Funnily enough, Wash had actually been talking retirement coming into the year, but now he might get another fat new contract instead. The Angels should strongly consider making a move on Washburn, even if they re-sign John Lackey, just to try and add another consistent veteran presence to the rotation.
- The Story: A Little League field in Maryland has been named in honor of Nick Adenhart. The Monkey Says: The field is in Adenhart’s hometown and a nice honor for the fallen pitcher.
- The Story: Torii Hunter if officially the unofficial captain of the Angels according to teammates. The Monkey Says: The Angels really needed a leader this year and Hunter has stepped up to fill the void now that he feels more comfortable in his second year with the club.
- The Story: Matt Palmer relishes his role as bullpen swing man. The Monkey Says: As a thirty-year old rookie, he should relish any role he’s been given. However, as effective as he has been in relief, the Angels might not have a choice but to put him back in the rotation if Trevor Bell doesn’t perform well in his next start.
- The Story: Trevor Bell will get the start this Friday for the Angels. The Monkey Says: The Angels haven’t promised Bell another start beyond that, so it is put up or shut up time for Bell. For the Angels’ sake, they need a strong start since they have almost no other options for the fifth starter.
- The Story: Joe Saunders will officially be activated to start for the Angels on Wednesday. The Monkey Says: Bell isn’t the only starter that will be watched closely this week. Saunders says he is feeling good again, but the proof will be in the pudding this Wednesday.
- The Story: Rob Neyer proves statistically how much Bobby Abreu’s presence has improved the rest of the Angels’ plate discipline. The Monkey Says: Bobby just keeps paying for himself doesn’t he? Too bad he won’t be so cheap this off-season, but whatever the price tag, the Angels should pay it.
- The Story: With so many key free agents this winter, who should the Angels’ top re-signing priority be? The Monkey Says: For my money, the top priority should be Figgins since he is the catalyst for the entire offense, but cases could be made for all the other free agents. Either way, Tony Reagins has his work cut out for him.
- AL West Update: The Rangers were off yesterday but will be starting a series in New York with the Yankees tonight. The Monkey Says: The lead is now an even five games for the Angels but at least the Rangers are up against such a tough opponent.
