- The Story: The Angels boast several of the Top 20 prospects in the vaunted Arizona Fall League. The Monkey Says: Mike Trout (#1), Fabio Martinez (#2), Randal Grichuk (#5) and Rolando Gomez (#17) all made Baseball America’s list, which is great news for a farm system that has thinned out considerably the last few years.
- The Story: The Angels surpassed the 3 million attendance mark over the weekend. The Monkey Says: Recession? What recession? This is the seventh straight year that Angel fans have shown up in huge droves to support the team.
- The Story: The Angels will announce the creation of the Nick Adenhart Award this week. The Monkey Says: The award was designed to honor their fallen teammate and will be given to the team’s best pitcher on the season.
- The Story: The Red Sox will have Jon Lester start Game 1 of the ALDS. The Monkey Says: That is bad news for the Halos who faced Lester twice in last year’s ALDS and scored zero runs off of him.
- The Story: Trevor Reckling, a top Angel pitching prospect, is out of the Baseball World Cup with an oblique injury. The Monkey Says: The injury is minor though, so Reckling should be fine soon.
- The Story: Aroldis Chapman, now a free agent, interests the Angels, but they won’t bid without seeing him face live batters. The Monkey Says: The Angels are being very cautious on the Chapman front because they do not want to get burned paying him a ton of money to have him become the Cuban version of Hideki Irabu.
- The Story: A stiff upper back is currently bothering Jered Weaver. The Monkey Says: Jered claims this is an annual problem and he is already feeling better. Hopefully he’ll get extra rest before the playoffs start to get all healed up.
- The Story: Bobby Abreu is chasing a lot of milestones this year. The Monkey Says: He joined Albert Pujols as the only active major leaguers with 7 straight seasons of 100+ RBIs and is one steal away from being the second player in history to steal 30+ bases and have 100+ RBIs in the same season for the fifth time.
- AL West Update: The Rangers took two of three from the Rays this weekend and are headed to Anaheim for their final series against the Angels. The Monkey Says: The Rangers are six games back with seven to play. The Angels’ magic numbers is down to two, meaning all they have to do is win one game this series and they will clinch the division title.
