The Story: A.J. Achter, Al Alburquerque clear waivers, are outrighted to Triple-A
MWAH Says: I always find it odd that players who are already in the minors, like Albuquerque, are nonetheless listed as getting an outright assignment to an affiliate when dropped off the roster. Why not “has cleared waivers and will stay at Triple-A”? Anyway, that Achter and Albuquerque are staying in the organization isn’t really big news, but it’s good in that the front office doesn’t have to go out searching of two other relievers for the Salt Lake bullpen. Lucas Luetge and Deolis Guerra have, for now, taken Achter and Albuquerque’s spots on the 40-man roster (and in Anaheim).
The Story: Andrelton Simmons resuming baseball activities
MWAH Says: Simmons is back to hitting, fielding, and throwing, but it’ll be a while still before he’s cleared to return to the Angels. The timeline for his thumb surgery recovery is a bit nebulous, but he could be back in as soon as four weeks.
The Story: C.J. Wilson, Cliff Pennington starting rehab assignments at High-A on Wednesday
MWAH Says: Wilson will likely stick with Inland Empire for a couple weeks if all goes well Wednesday, but Pennington should rejoin the Angels by Saturday. When he does, the team will have to decide whether to keep Brendan Ryan or Gregorio Petit around as the back-up. My money’s on Petit.
The Story: Mike Trout rules the world again
MWAH Says: Sam Miller said recently that his go-to barometer for when we’re far enough into the season to identify stats as “real” is when Mike Trout sits atop the WAR leaderboard. I guess that means we’ve reached that point.
The Story: Will the Tigers entertain a Mike Trout trade?
MWAH Says: A poor attempt at satire, we can hope.
The Story: Tim Lincecum will wear #55 with the Halos
MWAH Says: Well, at least he will once he works out a deal with its current owner. Assistant hitting coach Paul Sorrento has already said he’ll switch over to #44, so it’s now just a matter of figuring out for what to leverage Lincecum. Sorrento speculated he might ask for a dozen golf balls, but that seems pretty weak to me. He should totally hold out for at least one of Timmy’s Cy Young awards.
