The October 15, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes Mike Butcher expressing no hard feelings about being let go, Bud Black tabbed as a potential replacement, and more…
The Story: Mike Butcher has no ill will toward Eppler, Scioscia
MWAH Says: Butch called the ultimate decision to not return as pitching coach “a mutual one,” but the general consensus seems to be that the ax came from the very top. He also had nothing but great things to say about Billy Eppler, which is nice to see considering the situation. He shouldn’t have any issue latching on with another club.
The Story: Bud Black, Dave Hansen rumored for coaching spots
MWAH Says: There doesn’t seem to be much more than speculation so far, but those two guys certainly make the most sense to take over as the pitching and hitting coaches. The Angels pitching staff had great success under Black in the early 2000’s, as did the offense under Hansen in 2014. I’d be surprised if Black doesn’t end up managing somewhere, but maybe a chance to reunite with Scioscia and company (and stay in California) will trump gigs in Seattle and D.C.
The Story: Joe Smith speaks about his mother’s disease
MWAH Says: Smith gave a moving speech over the weekend at the Huntington’s Disease Society of America’s fundraising gala in San Diego. It’s a great listen if you have 10 minutes or so. Be sure to have Kleenex handy.
The Story: Angels prospects shine in AFL defeat
MWAH Says: The Solar Sox ultimately fell 7-6 on Wednesday, but you cann’t blame the Halos prospects. 1B Eric Aguilera, LF Caleb Adams, and C Stephen McGee combined to go 6-for-12 with 5 RBI on the day, with Adams and McGee each blasting solo dingers.
The Story: Rangers and Astros eliminated (again)
MWAH Says: A tough night for the state of Texas. If things had gone a little differently during the regular season, it could’ve been the Angels getting booted out of the playoffs yesterday. All things being equal, I think I prefer the schadenfreude of watching division rivals squander series leads to the Halos putting us all through the October ringer.
The Story: Sam Dyson call Bautista bat flip “backyard baseball”
MWAH Says: I don’t know about y’all, but I always found backyard baseball to be the most fun baseball. Not really sure it’s the pejorative Dyson thinks it is. Bautista worked his ass off for 30 years to get to that exact moment, and now you’re telling him he can’t savor it? C’mon, dude.
