The Story: Craig Gentry to remain on DL with a “personal medical condition”
MWAH Says: Gentry was already out with a back strain, but now there’s apparently something else going on. Whatever it is, I hope the reason for the confidentiality has to do with it being embarrassing—like, say, the George Brett hemorrhoids saga—and not something more serious.
The Story: Josh Hamilton will have surgery, miss all of 2016
MWAH Says: The decision to unload Hamilton last April continues to look better and better. No matter how well the deal ultimately works out, though, the Angels’ gross mishandling of the situation will forever remain a black mark upon the organization—the end never justifies the means.
The Story: RHP Danny Reynolds outrighted to Double-A
MWAH Says: Raise your hand if you forgot Reynolds was even on the roster. o/ The Angels picked the hard-throwing righty back up off of waivers from the Astros in April, and he’s been toiling away at Double-A Arkansas ever since. He was DFA-ed over the weekend to make room on the roster for Tim Lincecum, and it seems will remain in the organization.
The Story: Huston Street inching closer to return
MWAH Says: Street threw a 20-pitch sim game on Monday and is expected to throw again on Friday in Arizona. He’s still hoping to return this month, but he’s running out of days.
The Story: Johnny Giavotella shows a knack for defensive gems
MWAH Says: He has made some really nice plays lately. The advanced defensive metrics still aren’t sold on Giavotella as a plus defender, but he has seemed to move closer to average. Considering where he was last year, that’s a massive improvement.
The Story: Jim Abbott and scout Ryan Leahy will represent the Angels at the draft
MWAH Says: Pretty sure that just means they’ve been charged with reading the names into the microphone on the first day of the proceedings, when everyone’s watching. Can’t imagine they force them to stick around for day two and three.
The Story: Shane Victorino released by the Cubs, still looking for an opportunity
MWAH Says: I never understood why he decided to stick with Chicago after they had re-signed Dexter Fowler. Surely he had a better chance cracking the 25-man roster on literally any other team. The Angels have already gone down that road, and I doubt they’ll do it again.
