The Story: Yunel Escobar and Cliff Pennington day-to-day with hand, leg injuries
MWAH Says: Both Escobar and Pennington left Thursday night’s game early after hurting themselves playing defense. With eight relievers on the roster rather than an extra glove, Geovany Soto had to play third base in the ninth, costing the Angels at least a chance at extra innings thanks to an errant throw to first. Pennington’s leg cramps probably won’t keep him out long, but Escobar’s jammed thumb might put him on the shelf next to Andrelton Simmons. We’ll won’t know for sure until at least Friday.
The Story: Javy Guerra designated for assignment
MWAH Says: One night too late. Guerra could (and should) have been DFA’d for Jhoulys Chacin instead of A.J. Achter. Instead, he was kept around for one more day and handed the ball in the fifth inning Thursday, where he proceeded to retire none of the batters he faced for the second straight outing. Rey Navarro or Gregorio Petit will likely be called up in Guerra’s stead so that the team isn’t stuck using a catcher at third base again.
The Story: Angels hopeful Andrelton Simmons can return by June 21
MWAH Says: That’d be exactly six weeks of post-op rehab. It’d be nice if he could return then, but there is absolutely zero reason to push it with the way this team is playing. Don’t want to risk making it a bigger thing than it is just so he can maybe help keep them from being the worst club in the AL.
The Story: C.J. Wilson throws 40-pitch bullpen session, is on track for mid-June return
MWAH Says: Hey, at least someone’s recovery is going as expected. Best-case scenario here is that Wilson returns and pitches well enough to make himself an attractive trade target at the deadline. Second best scenario? He pitches well enough down the stretch to make a qualifying offer feasible, giving the Angels their first as an organization.
The Story: Roberto Baldoquin out again with a strained hamstring
MWAH Says: This signing keeps getting worse and worse. The Angels’ $13 million man has now been on the DL four times in a season-plus of organized ball and has posted a paltry .231/.262/.290 line over 82 games in a hitter-friendly league when healthy. Maybe next time don’t make your one big international signing, one that’ll hamstring the team for the next two years, a guy that no one else seems willing to break the bank for? Just a thought.
The Story: Kyle Lohse signs major league deal with the Rangers
MWAH Says: There’s one potential rotation addition off the table. Looking pretty good that Tim Lincecum will end up in an Angels uniform. To numb the pain, just imagine how awesome that last sentence would have sounded pre-2012.
