Halo Headlines: Featherston traded; Farm system ranked last

The February 10, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes Taylor Featherston departing for the Phillies for nothing, Keith Law saying not nice things about the team’s prospects, and more…

The Story: Taylor Featherston traded to the Phillies for cash considerations

MWAH Says: Man, what an absolute travesty of a move did Taylor Featherston end up being. The Angels should have returned him to the Rockies last May, when it was clear his bat wasn’t anywhere close to being ready for the big leagues. Instead, they stuck it out the entire year and now have absolutely nothing to show for it. He gets to spend 2016 developing further at Triple-A, as was the original plan, but he won’t do it with the Angels. It’s clear Featherston wouldn’t have made it through waivers, so I guess it’s good the club got something in return. But imagine what a having a halfway decent hitter as the backup infielder could have done for the team last year. Maybe make up that one win that separated the team from the playoffs? Probably best not to dwell on.

The Story: Keith Law ranks Angels farm system last in baseball

MWAH Says: Probably for the best that this is an ESPN Insider post, because what he has to say about the Angels is not fun reading. Let’s just say it rhymes with “blurst lever”. And with the organization’s temporary bar on international signing and just one first-round pick come July, it’s not going to get better anytime soon. Just gotta pray that C.J. Wilson puts together one hell of a spring and/or first half to reel in at least one promising prospect.

The Story: The NRI Watch: American League

MWAH Says: Even the club’s non-roster invitees are uninspiring compared to other teams’. The only good thing R.J. Anderson has to say is that Taylor Ward might be worth a look. Otherwise it’s “pitchers you didn’t realize are still active” and “tumbleweeds”. Oh joy, can’t wait…

The Story: Jose Mota taking over Fox Sports West’s Twitter account on Monday

MWAH Says: No idea if this is something FSW has done in the past, but they’re definitely doing it now. If you need your Angels fix and can endure Jose Mota, #MotaMondays (at 8pm PT) is I guess for you. This coming week he’ll be asking Hector Santiago questions.

The Story: Evan Gattis to miss 4-6 weeks following hernia surgery

MWAH Says: That what happens when you spent your winter felling trees and lifting them with your bare hands. At least that’s what I assume he was doing. The recovery won’t put Gattis out long, but he could miss the start of Houston’s season. Not like they don’t have five amazing prospects waiting in the wing to take his place, though. The Astros don’t come to town until the end of May, so he’ll likely be well back by then.

The Story: White Sox sign Mat Latos to one-year, $3 million deal

MWAH Says: What is going on with the starting pitcher market when even a guy who bounced around to three different clubs and finished the season with a 4.95 ERA in more than 110 IP gets a guaranteed big-league deal? Latos was with the Angels for all of a week, and that was more than enough. He was a Cy Young candidate not too long ago, so there’s always a chance he’ll bounce back, but I’m glad the Halos aren’t the ones to take that leap. Not like they could afford it on Arte’s shoestring budget anyway.
