The May 5, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes a franchise legend providing color commentary for a few games, the bullpen coach having surgery to alleviate symptoms that have sidelined him for weeks, and more…

The Story: Bobby Grich will provide color commentary on KLAA this weekend

MWAH Says: The Angels Hall of Famer will step in for Mark Langston this weekend when the Halos take on the Rays. I’m intrigued about what kind of insights he’ll bring to the broadcast. Certainly can’t be worse than Langston.

The Story: Bullpen coach Scott Radinsky undergoes operation, is recovering at home

MWAH Says: I’m not going to speculate on what was wrong or what doctors did, I’m just glad they were able to do something to try getting Radinsky back on his feet. We hope he has a speedy recovery and eventually feels well enough to return to the bullpen.

The Story: Richards’ status for Friday still in doubt

MWAH Says: At this point I think it’s pretty clear he won’t throw on Friday. He didn’t do his normal midweek bullpen session, and he didn’t even play catch on Wednesday. Richards says his body is still “fatigued”, so I doubt the Angels will want to push him into a situation where he doesn’t feel 100 percent. Just who will replace him is anyone’s guess. Matt Shoemaker hasn’t been in Triple-A long enough to be recalled without someone else going on the DL, so he’s out. Maybe Cory Rasmus?

The Story: Rafael Ortega has impressed Angels, but could be optioned for Daniel Nava

MWAH Says: Nothing new here, just wanted to point out that keeping Ji-Man Choi on the roster is absurd. I don’t know why this is even a question. Both Nava and Cliff Pennington can play first base just as capably, and Ortega has proven to be a much better lefty bat than Choi. The only thing Choi might have that those guys don’t is the promise of power, but he’s yet to demonstrate that at all. Can we not have a repeat of the Taylor Featherston situation? That final roster spot is important. Occupying it with an immovable player who’s not very good only hurts the team.

The Story: Neal Cotts not ready to call it a career, is pitching well for Triple-A Salt Lake

MWAH Says: Should Jose Alvarez or Greg Mahle go down, Cotts will likely get the call. Until then, he’s going to have a tough time breaking into the big-league bullpen. Having more than two lefties in the ‘pen shouldn’t matter if they’re all the best arms, but it does in practice.
