The January 28, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes acquiring a corner infielder from the Tigers, a return to baseball activities for Albert Pujols, and more…
The Story: Angels acquire 1B/3B Jefry Marte from Tigers for 2B Kody Eaves
MWAH Says: My first thought after this trade was, “Uh oh, Albert Pujols’ recovery must have hit a setback.” But then I took a deep breath and realized that Marte was added to fill the spot on the depth chart vacated by Efren Navarro. Marte is still young (25) and has some prospect pedigree in his past, so there’s always the potential for surprise, but his future likely entails a bit role off the bench. Eaves, 22, is a low minors second baseman with a hole in his swing the size of Planet Nine. His departure shouldn’t impact the club.
The Story: Albert Pujols cleared to swing off a tee, still questionable for Opening Day
MWAH Says: Albert is still in the early stages of his rehab from offseason foot surgery, but any progress is good progress at this point. Opening Day still seems to be within the realm of possibility, but I’d honestly prefer if they took some extra time to ensure he’s 100%. Pujols playing at less than optimal health does not help the team.
The Story: Angels designate 2B Ronald Torreyes for assignment
MWAH Says: That didn’t last long. Gotta think that the team fully expects him to clear waivers and remain in the system. Otherwise, why bother claiming a guy on Tuesday if you’re just going to let him go on Wednesday?
The Story: Fox Sports West releases Spring Training TV schedule
MWAH Says: All of the Angels’ 31 exhibition games this spring will be televised. Thirty of them will air on FSW. The lone holdout, the March 31 opener of the Freeway Series, will air on PrimeTicket. For all split-squad dates, the home (Tempe) game will be aired. Only two games will be on tape delay.
The Story: Andrelton Simmons will wear #2 with the Angels
MWAH Says: No, Erick Aybar didn’t grow four inches over the winter, it’s a totally different guy. Good for Simmons to get the number now before MLB retire’s Derek Jeter’s number league-wide. It’s only a matter of time, right?
The Story: MLB announces staff for new Front Office & Field Staff Diversity Pipeline Program
MWAH Says: Well that’s sure a mouthful to say. Maybe MLB should invest in a Naming Programs Program as well. Anywho, the FOFSDPP seems like a solid move for the league, and it’s a wonder it took so long to put something like this together. Diversity in the workplace doesn’t just happen. You have to make it happen because there are often several hurdles for people of color well before they ever reach the point where they can submit a resume.
