The April 29, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes the team naming a temporary new closer, a former ‘Third Baseman of the Future’ adjusting to life as a utility player, and more…

The Story: Joe Smith will close while Huston Street is on the DL

MWAH Says: As expected. Still no word on who will be replacing Street on the active roster, but it’ll probably be either Al Alburquerque, Cam Bedrosian, or Javy Guerra. Whoever it ends up being will likely slot in at the bottom of the bullpen hierarchy. The move will be announced later today.

The Story: Kyle Kubitza sees new utility role in Salt Lake as potential ticket to the majors

MWAH Says: I’m glad that Kubitza has found a way to put a positive spin on his new role, and I do hope he makes it, but this newfound “versatility” smacks of an organization just not knowing what to do with him. I fear his future may look similar to Grant Green’s: nominal versatility bred of below-average defense across the board that translates to minimal playing time in brief big-league stints.

The Story: Dee Gordon suspended 80 games for PED use

MWAH Says: Should have known from the day he showed up to camp with all that new muscle mas… What’s that? He’s still a human toothpick? Oh, well. Guess it’s not so simple, then.

The Story: Garrett Richards’ new pitch is a positive change(up)

MWAH Says: This is like the third article this month about Richards’ new pitch, and all have used a play-on words in the headline. Wouldn’t have it any other way. Of note: Richards is posting a 40.94% Whiff/Swing rate with the pitch so far, which is 15th among starters who have thrown at least 40 change-ups. Pretty good.

The Story: RHP Alex Blackford shining in new role with Double-A Arkansas

MWAH Says: Blackford earned Texas League Pitcher of the Week honors last week, just four outings into his new gig as a full-time starter. The 25-year-old right-hander owns a spectacular 1.27 ERA and 11.4 K/9 rate in 21.1 IP so far this season. He wasn’t on anyone’s prospect radar heading into the season, but (despite being a little old for his level) should start drawing notice if he can keep it up.

The Story: Adrian Beltre, at 37, continues to deliver for the Rangers

MWAH Says: I link to this not to again wonder what might have been, but to point out the great quote from Albert Pujols: “”I think I would have 3,000 hits already if it wasn’t for him… He probably robs me at least twice in every series.” Also, Beltre is objectively awesome, as much as he’s tormented the Angels over the years. I hope he sticks around forever.

The Story: New teammates by his side, Yunel Escobar proves drive

MWAH Says: I’m glad things are off to a good start with Escobar, and I really hope the situation doesn’t sour over time.
