The October 20, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes a pitching coach candidate potentially hitting the open market, Angels tickets going on sale, and more…
The Story: Mike Maddux a name to watch for pitching coach
MWAH Says: Maddux is still officially with the Rangers for a few more days, but after that he could end up anywhere. Texas has already opted not to renew the contracts of their hitting and bullpen coaches, so the sense is that Maddux might become a free agent as well. Bud Black is still the presumed favorite for the Angels pitching coach position, but that hinges on him not getting a managing gig.
The Story: Tickets for 2016 opening series on sale today
MWAH Says: The Angels play an exhibition game against the Cubs on April 3, then face them in a two-game series April 4-5 to start the regular season. Pretty weird. Anyway, tickets to that specific series go on sale this morning at 10am PT. Have at it!
The Story: Matt Klentak a favorite for Phillies GM job
MWAH Says: Yesterday it was reported that J.J. Piccolo was the presumed front-runner to be the next Ruben Amaro. Today that’s not quite so clear. Klentak has long been tied to the position because of his long-standing relationship with Andy McPhail, and ESPN reports disputing Piccolo’s availability make Klentak a favorite again. Kinda hope everyone finishing restocking their front offices soon so that the Angels aren’t left scrambling when the offseason officially begins.
The Story: Chad Hinshaw savoring second shot at AFL action
MWAH Says: Hinshaw missed a fair chunk of 2015 with a thumb injury, so his month in Arizona is likely more about making up for lost time than anything else. The 25-year-old outfielder doesn’t have much pop in his bat, but a keen eye (career .382 OBP) and a solid glove could earn him some playing time in Anaheim next season if he can stay healthy.
The Story: Angels AFL team falls to 0-5
MWAH Says: Still a small sample, but there’s a chance the pitching on this Solar Sox team is historically bad—they’ve now allowed 48 runs in just five games. Eric Aguilera was the only Angels player to get on the field Monday. He went 1-for-5 with an RBI.
The Story: Toronto claims Pat Venditte on waivers
MWAH Says: That the 93-win Blue Jays were able to put a claim in on the A’s switch-pitcher means that the Angels let him go by, which is unfortunate. Venditte will never have overpowering stuff, but just the possibility of limiting a righty and lefty specialist to one roster spot should be enough to take a flyer on him. The Jays are infamous for their winter waiver activity, so perhaps Venditte will hit the wire a second time.
