Halo Headlines: Maddux officially available, Calhoun a Super Two

The October 30, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes a potential pitching coach hitting the market, Kole Calhoun joining the arbitration club, and more…

The Story: Mike Maddux will not return to Rangers

MWAH Says: I think we now officially have a frontrunner for the open pitching coach position. Maddux is really the only guy who’s name has been linked to the position (other than the now-employed-elsewhere Bud Black), but he wasn’t actually available until yesterday.

The Story: Kole Calhoun awarded Super Two status

MWAH Says: I completely missed this the other day, not sure how that happened. Anyway, you can bet the Angels are pretty bummed about this development, seeing as they’ll have to pay Calhoun at least six times more than they would have in 2016 had he missed the cutoff—$600K vs. $3.6M. The pay raise is well deserved, though, so there really isn’t anything for them to gripe about. God forbid teams should have to pay young players what they’re worth.

The Story: Angels arms and bats shine in Solar Sox win

MWAH Says: Oh my goodness the Angels’ AFL pitching prospects scratched together a solid day of pitching. Ryan Etsell, Harrison Cooney, Greg Mahle, and Alan Busenitz all pitched Thursday, combining to allow just three runs over seven innings of work. One of the guys (Cooney) even managed to drop his ERA below 9.00. Baby steps! On the other side of things, the Angels’ bats remained strong: Chad Hinshaw walked twice and Eric Aguilera singled in a run.

The Story: Chris Iannetta can’t get that cool new pair of shoes either

MWAH Says: The stars, they’re just like us! I know that initial excitement followed by immediate rejection all too well. Yes, it is an incredibly slow Angels news day, why do you ask?

The Story: Dan Jennings fired by Marlins

MWAH Says: Jeffrey Loria hired a new manager and fired his general manager on the same day. Don’t see that happen all too often. The only reason this is a Halo Headline is that Jennings gives Billy Eppler yet another experienced option to replace Matt Klentak and Scott Servais in the front office. Not sure how likely it is—probably more so than Alex Anthopoulos, if nothing else—but it’s there.
