The February 5, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes a pair of all-time Angels helping the team celebrate the “move” to Tempe for spring training, Jerry Dipoto finally selling his house in Newport Beach, and more…
The Story: Garrett Anderson, Chuck Finley to be at Angels Moving Day next Thursday
MWAH Says: Tyler Skaggs will be there as well, signing autographs alongside Anderson and Finley as the team moves some of its equipment into a truck for the trip to Tempe. This is definitely the weirdest annual promotion the team does, and it feels a lot like a fan-fest cop out. Those who were around in the ’90s will remember the club used to do a meet-and-greet/photo day, where a dozen players or so would stand for photos and walk around the stadium foul line signing autographs. Would be nice to at least get something like that back.
The Story: Jerry Dipoto sells Newport Beach home for $2.66 million
MWAH Says: Slow news day. You’ll remember that Dipoto put the house on the market last May, which led to speculation that his resignation had been a long time coming. Dipoto remains it was just a coincidence, and doesn’t really matter whether it was related or not at this point. No word on whether the family is staying in the area or relocating to the Emerald City.
The Story: The year’s most literary hit-by-pitch
MWAH Says: Meg Rowley takes a fun look back at the weird dust-up between Jered Weaver and Kyle Seager from last September. Weaver’s always been a bit fiery on the mound, but for most Angels fans that translates as a lovable hard-headedness. For fans of other teams, I imagine it translates slightly different.
The Story: The volatile career trajectories of young shortstops
MWAH Says: A brief look at how starkly career trajectories can diverge in just a few years time. Andrelton Simmons is presented as one of the happy endings. Ruben Tejada and Tim Beckham, considerably less so.
The Story: Bernie Sanders rants about baseball in 1999 indie film cameo
MWAH Says: Pretty funny. By my count, Sanders is the third presidential candidate to randomly appear in a movie around the turn of the century. Ben Carson was in Stuck on You, Donald Trump was in Two Weeks Notice, and now Bernie. Strange times.
