The Story: Cliff Pennington returns to DL with left hamstring strain

MWAH Says: The same ailment that Pennington just returned from over the weekend. He aggravated the strain Tuesday night while legging out a bunt single, leaving the shortstop role to be shared by Gregorio Petit and Brendan Ryan for the foreseeable future. Ryan had cleared waivers only yesterday. Thankfully, no one scooped him up.

The Story: C.J. Wilson shoulder MRI reveals no new damage

MWAH Says: I suppose that’s good, but he’s still shut down indefinitely. Wilson seemed to be progressing fine in short bursts, but couldn’t do much of anything in the days after working five innings in a rehab start. That conversion to relief is looking like a better idea every day. With the odds of trading him pretty much out the window, might as well at least get some innings out of his arm.

The Story: Javy Guerra recalled; Chris Jones optioned back to Triple-A

MWAH Says: Wow, so Jones was literally with the team for one day just in case Hector Santiago couldn’t get out of the third inning again. Harsh. Guerra’s been great at Triple-A this year, but his previous stint in Anaheim didn’t go well. Like everyone else who’s made their way through Cory Rasmus’s spot the last couple weeks, Guerra is at the bottom of the bullpen hierarchy.

The Story: Jefry Marte recalled; Kaleb Cowart optioned back to Triple-A

MWAH Says: With the night Marte had following his promotion Tuesday—4-for-4 with a double and a homer—it’s probably gonna be a while before Cowart gets another chance in Anaheim. Marte’s hot bat also allows for a little more leeway in getting Yunel Escobar and his bruised wrist back into the lineup.

The Story: Mike Trout leads all AL outfielders in All-Star voting

MWAH Says: He’s also third overall in voting. I imagine he’ll leapfrog into first eventually. Kole Calhoun and Yunel Escobar have an outside shot at making the team as well, but not via the fan vote.
