Halo Headlines: Richards avoids arbitration; Cespedes market narrows

The January 22, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes the team agreeing to terms with Garrett Richards for the coming season, Yoenis Cespedes reportedly choosing between the Nats and Mets, and more…

The Story: Garrett Richards agrees to $6.425 million deal for 2016

MWAH Says: Man, Super Two players get expensive real quick. The only arb-eligible player left unsigned is Kole Calhoun, who’s in his first year of Super-Two arbitration. If anyone’s going to have multiple years of his remaining team control bought out, it’s going to be him. Would cost the Halos marginally more this year AAV-wise, but will save money for 2017 and beyond.

The Story: Yoenis Cespedes torn between sticking with Mets and signing nine-figure deal with Nats

MWAH Says: New York want Cespedes to come back on a three-year deal, potentially with an opt-out after the first year. It blows my mind that something like that is on the table and the Angels are still nowhere to be found. If the worry is truly staying over the luxury tax in 2017, how does an opt-out after 2016 not immediately rectify that? Don’t get it.

The Story: Ben Revere only Nats outfielder who makes trade sense if Cespedes goes to DC

MWAH Says: If Washington does end up reeling Cespedes in, they’ll have something of an outfield logjam on their hands. Jayson Werth probably won’t be happy being relegated to part-time duty, but his full no-trade clause, 10-and-5 rights, and salary make him pretty much impossible to trade. Revere could work, but who would the Nats want in return? Their starting pitching depth is probably the best in baseball, so they have no need for a C.J. Wilson or Hector Santiago.

The Story: C.J. Wilson’s winter workout is the obstacle course of your childhood dreams

MWAH Says: I mean, there are no American Gladiators to take on or Nerf balls to dodge, but it’s still pretty cool. Don’t really understand the functionality of something like that, but it does look fun.

The Story: Angels one of several clubs to ‘kick the tires’ on Austin Jackson

MWAH Says: No indication of whether this was a recent thing or something that happened before the team added Daniel Nava and Craig Gentry. I suppose adding Jackson could work if they wanted to repeat the sort of royal rumble thing they did with second base last spring. Otherwise he’s just redundant. Also, not good.

The Story: NL could adopt designated hitter by 2017

MWAH Says: Just get it done already. No one wants to watch a bunch of gangly dudes fail to put down sacrifice bunts.

The Story: Jessica Mendoza is embracing the pressure that comes with her pioneer status

MWAH Says: The incessant harassment that women in sports have to endure from men is absurd no matter what kind of position they hold. I can’t imagine how much that’s amplified for Mendoza being a woman in a position of influence. That she’s able to navigate it with such optimism is inspiring. I hope she kicks ass in the booth for a long time and leads others to put dolts like Curt Schilling out of the field for good.
