The May 10, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes Andrelton Simmons needing surgery to repair his “other” UCL, Stephen Strasburg deflating the 2017 free-agent pitching class, and more…

The Story: Andrelton Simmons needs thumb surgery, will miss at least six weeks

MWAH Says: Of course. And it’s more than a little fitting that the ligament he tore in his thumb is also called a UCL. Kind of on the nose, baseball gods. The recovery time for the Simmons’ injury is pretty volatile: Dustin Pedroia played a full season with it before getting surgery; Bryce Harper missed nine weeks with it in 2014, Jed Lowrie missed three months with it last year. The minimum time Simmons will be out is six weeks, which would put him in line to return in late June.

The Story: Stephen Strasburg signs 7-year, $175 million extension with the Nationals

MWAH Says: The 2017 free agent pitching market just lost its one marquee player, so if the Angels want to really restock the rotation this winter they’re going to have to look to trades and international signings. It’s either that or overpaying for Clay Buchholz, Andrew Cashner, or Jeremy Hellickson.

The Story: Rey Navarro likely to take Simmons’ roster spot

MWAH Says: The switch hitter will probably split time with Cliff Pennington at short the next several weeks when not subbing for Johnny Giavotella at second. If there’s a silver lining to all this, it’s that the lineup might find a little more balance with three switch hitters in it. Now if we could just get Ji-Man Choi off the roster…

The Story: Billy Eppler says there’s “no chance” the Angels are trading Mike Trout

MWAH Says: Good. So we can be done with this now, yes?

The Story: Fishing for a Mike Trout trade

MWAH Says: No, we’re not done? *SIGH*… OK. To be fair, this article is a little fun. The folks at Beyond the Boxscore looked to see how many prospects it would take, based on their projected future values, to match the 40.5 WAR that Trout has already put up in his four-plus seasons. The answer? A LOT.
