Halo Headlines: Simmons to the DL?; Lincecum on radar

The May 9, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes Andrelton Simmons spraining some part of his left hand/wrist, the team zeroing in on Tim Lincecum as a potential rotation addition, and more…

The Story: Andrelton Simmons exits Sunday’s game early with thumb/wrist sprain

MWAH Says: The official Angels Twitter account declared Simmons’ injury a left thumb sprain, but the OC Register has an entire article calling it a wrist sprain. So which is it? My initial inclination is to side with the team account, but this is the same one that labeled Garrett Richards’ injury as “dehydration”, so… this will probably end in Simmons’ hand falling off, is what I’m saying.

The Story: Angels among four teams with ‘early interest’ in Tim Lincecum

MWAH Says: Jon Heyman writes (on Facebook, weirdly) that the Halos are in competition with the White Sox, Diamondbacks, and Giants for Big Time Timmy Jim’s services. I like the idea of the Angels adding Lincecum on a minor-league deal, but he’s not going to be the immediate help the team needs. He’s still in recovery mode from hip surgery, so it’d probably be at least a few weeks before he could step in and save the bullpen from its current state of exhaustion. And by that time, C.J. Wilson and/or Tyler Skaggs could be back. If they do sign Lincecum, then, he won’t be the only addition.

The Story: Angels among teams to watch Kyle Lohse throw

MWAH Says: Eppler should make this move yesterday. Lohse is just a season removed from being a solid mid-rotation starter, and his horrid 2015 was fueled largely by an inflated BABIP (.319) and an absurd HR/FB percentage (10.9%). His velocity and peripherals were the same as ever, so unlike Lincecum there’s at least some reason to believe Lohse can get back to being an average-ish MLB starter.

The Story: Angels could be in on established outfielders

MWAH Says: Lmao. There’s no way Billy Eppler is thinking about adding another corner outfielder right now. Thanks for the laugh though, Cafardo.

The Story: Calhoun batting second “is a look we might stay with,” per Scioscia

MWAH Says: My goodness, this took long enough. I guess we should be happy they figured it out at all? Too bad it probably doesn’t matter at this point how optimal the offense is…

The Story: Angels call up Javy Guerra from Triple-A

MWAH Says: He’s up to give the rest of the bullpen a breather—he pitched three scoreless innings over the weekend—likely only until Wednesday, when the team needs a starter to take on the Cardinals. My money’s on Matt Shoemaker returning to the rotation, but I suppose they could go with Cory Rasmus again if they decide they want Guerra around a little longer.

The Story: Japanese superstar Shohei Otani might be interested in MLB if he can be a dual threat

MWAH Says: Oh man this would be awesome. Otani is the modern-day Babe Ruth of the NPL: He owns a career 2.75 ERA in three-plus seasons as a starting pitcher, and is batting .308/.362/.654 this year as a part-time outfielder. Dude is only 21. If ever the Angels were to dive back into the East Asian market, this is the guy to do it for.
