The February 9, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes single-game tickets for the coming season going on sale in two weeks, MLB working on making a quick rule change for second-base slides, and more…
The Story: Angels single-game tickets go on sale February 20
MWAH Says: I’m always so surprised at how late in the game these tickets go on sale. I realize the club wants to get as many people on the season-ticket and flex-plan bandwagon as possible before giving them a “lesser” option, but not giving fans the chance to buy single-game (or single-series!) tickets as Christmas presents seems like a huge missed opportunity. Forcing them to buy Angels Bucks in $10 increments doesn’t really cut it. No kid’s excited about getting Monopoly money in her/his stocking. Like, even if there were only a three-day window in December and/or a limited number of tickets for each game, it’d probably be a huge hit.
The Story: MLB and Players Union working to change second-base slide rule for 2016
MWAH Says: How about just enforcing the rule as it’s already written? No need to complicate things by putting a new rule on top of the existing one. “A batter is out when a preceding runner shall, in the umpire’s judgment, intentionally interfere with a fielder who is attempting to catch a thrown ball or to throw a ball in an attempt to complete any play” is a pretty clear rule. The comment for it even clarifies that it is talking specifically about breaking up double plays.
The Story: Jered Weaver discusses the big donation he made to his alma mater
MWAH Says: Weaver had lots of nice things to say about his time with the Dirtbags. Fun Factoid from the article: Weaver was known as the “Friday Knight” during his tenure at Long Beach State. I wish that’d stuck.
The Story: Rebound seasons could give Angels a boost in 2016
MWAH Says: They definitely could! Not everyone is going to, though. Not all bad seasons are the result of poor luck and/or injury. Sometimes the players just aren’t good anymore. Of the 10 players Alden Gonzalez identifies as bounceback candidates, I’d put money on maybe three—Tyler Skaggs, Mike Morin, Craig Gentry—to markedly improve on their 2015 production.
The Story: Vlad Guerrero turns 41 today
MWAH Says: If Raul Ibanez can get a deal in Anaheim at age 42, surely Vlad can do it at 41. Sure, he hasn’t suited up for a big-league club since 2011, but it’s not like he can’t still hit dingers. And the Angels are pretty thin at the DH position….
