Halo Headlines: Skaggs expects innings limit in 2016, Dipoto makes first M’s trade

The November 6, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes speculation on an innings limit for the rehabbing Tyler Skaggs, a familiar name making the first trade of the winter, and more…

The Story: Skaggs ready to “re-make” rotation, expects innings limit

MWAH Says: By the time the left-hander takes the hill in Tempe next Spring, he’ll be 18 months removed from his Tommy John surgery. That’s a much longer window than the typical recovery time, so theoretically it should make him a much safer bet to not re-injure his elbow. Some sort of upper limit on his pitching is still probably smart, but making innings the denominator for that limit is not. An inning can be three minutes or 20, three batters or 10, five pitches or 30. None are the same, making a hard and fast threshold meaningless. Pitches thrown and/or batters faced aren’t perfect either, but they’re far more precise and are in line with the limitations set on him during his rehab—i.e. 70 and 90-pitch bullpens.

The Story: Mariners, Rays kick off winter with six-player deal

MWAH Says: I guess Dipoto was really itching to get into the trading game. Jerry sent SS Brad Miller, RHP Danny Farquhar, and 1B Logan Morrison to the Rays in exchange for RHP Nate Karns, LHP C.J. Riefenhauser, and OF Boog Powell (No Relation). Not exactly the most exciting trade of all time, but they’re all at least semi-decent players. If I had to pick a “winner”, I’d go with the M’s.

The Story: Should the Angels Give David Freese a Qualifying Offer?

MWAH Says: Actually a much tougher question to answer than I thought it would be. Other than the 37-year-old Juan Uribe, Freese is the only legit third baseman on the market this winter, meaning he’ll probably get a pretty hefty pay day if he doesn’t have a draft pick tied to him. If he does, things get way dicier. He probably knows this, which is why the Angels have to be worried that if they offered him a QO, he’d take it. No one’s done it yet, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be the first. Not sure the Angels could recover from losing more than half ($15.8M) of their available funds ($25M) right at the offset.

The Story: Joe Blanton is Awesome Now, Apparently

MWAH Says: *sobs inconsolably for the rest of the day* *remembers the next day that Blanton also gets a World Series ring from the Royals, sobs some more*

The Story: Terry Smith nominated for Best Radio Call award

MWAH Says: This is part of those Esurance awards that MLB is desperately trying to make a thing. It’s not a thing. Smith’s call on Trout’s miracle catch was alright, I guess, other than making it sound like Trout was literally balancing on top of the wall, but it kind of feels like those old Gold Glove results where it had nothing to do with defense (the call) and everything to do with offense (the play).

The Story: Solar Sox actually win a game

MWAH Says: It’s a Guy Fawkes Day miracle. Cubs prospect Rob Zatryzny did the heavy lifting, holding the opponent scoreless over five innings, but a Halo helped along the way. Eric Aguilera went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored on the afternoon.
