The Thursday, May 19, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes yet another integral player going on the disabled list, a far less integral player becoming a free agent, and more…
The Story: Geovany Soto hits DL with meniscus tear; Jett Bandy recalled
MWAH Says: Soto, who has a long history of knee issues, reportedly felt the tear Wednesday afternoon while working on an elliptical. An injury suffered while working out would be extremely fitting for this team, but I’m more apt to believe he hurt it the night before while flailing at Clayton Kershaw sliders. The don’t call it a “knee-buckler” for nothing. Anyway, Soto will undergo surgery on Thursday and is expected to miss four to six weeks. Jett Bandy will fill in behind the plate in the meantime.
The Story: LHP Neal Cotts granted his release
MWAH Says: Not surprising. The Angels simply didn’t have room for him in the bullpen right now. The way things have been going, though, he probably would have had an opening in another week or so if he didn’t exercise his opt-out. Oh well.
The Story: Craig Gentry to begin rehab assignment on Friday
MWAH Says: Take your time, Craig. No rush.
The Story: Lack of pain helped Garrett Richards decide to wait on surgery
MWAH Says: That’s great it doesn’t hurt and all, but is a lack of pain any kind of indicator that a full UCL tear is repairable? I have a strong feeling the answer there is “no, not at all”, but who knows. Maybe Richards is now like R.A. Dickey in that he doesn’t actually need a UCL to pitch? One can dream. In the end, Richards’ decision to at least delay surgery won’t affect his return time, which has always been 2018.
The Story: The need for adjusted exit velocity
MWAH Says: All those instant Exit Velo readings when Mike Trout or Giancarlo Stanton really connects with one? Maybe not as reliable we thought.
The Story: On Bonds’ 73 homers and Boggs’ 64 Miller Lites
MWAH Says: Any article that mentions Boggs’ infamous cross-country flight is an automatic link.
