The March 2, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes the first official unofficial game of the year, talk of the league expanding to 32 teams, and more…
The Story: Angels kick off Cactus League action against the Giants at noon
MWAH Says: Yay, real live baseball! Boo, it’s in the middle of the work day! Hope you get an extra long lunch today to watch a few innings.
The Story: MLB could expand to 32 teams in the next decade
MWAH Says: My vote would be for Puerto Rico and a return to Montreal. Still way too soon to come up with anything concrete though.
The Story: Things are looking ‘upside’ for Angels rotation
MWAH Says: The Halos rotation has highest potential upside of any team in the majors, per PECOTA. That’s sort of a backhanded compliment, unfortunately, as it’s only so because their average projections are so bad. Still, there are far worse things than lots of upside.
The Story: Prospect Q&A: Gatto craves consistency
MWAH Says: Joe Gatto opens up about his 2015 season, his goals for 2016, and what it means to suddenly be the franchise’s top pitching prospect.
The Story: Nava fueled by unlikely rise to major leagues
MWAH Says: Yet another “guy looking for a bounceback season” article. This time Daniel Nava gets the treatment, complete with his full origin story. It’s a pretty great one if you don’t know it.
The Story: Yunesky Maya’s reggaeton jam is tearing up the Angels clubhouse
MWAH Says: The song itself is fun, but the video in which he’s lip-syncing said song on live TV is incredibly painful. Wish they had a camera on him when he freestyled in the clubhouse.
The Story: Aroldis Chapman suspended 30 games under new domestic violence policy
MWAH Says: Well, it’s a start. A month-long suspension is certainly not insignificant, but it still feels a little without teeth. Had MLB opted to suspend him for longer, Chapman likely would have appealed because it would have delayed his free agency a year, so 30 games was as long as they could go really. Why suspensions stop a player’s service-time clock at all is a mystery.
The Story: Rays to play exhibition game in Cuba on March 22
MWAH Says: Will be curious to see what the TV situation will be for this one. Cuba has rather infamously banned television broadcasts of MLB games, so what happens when an MLB club plays the Cuban national team?
