Halo Headlines: Street has close ties to film, Erstad withdraws candidacy

The November 16, 2015 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes a Hollywood film becoming a family affair for Huston Street, a former Halo withdrawing his candidacy for the Dodgers manager gig, and more…

The Story: My All American holds deep, personal meaning to Street

MWAH Says: A very touching story about the Street family. Huston’s dad was not only the quarterback at Texas in the time My All American story took place, his brother Juston got to portray their dad, who passed away suddenly just before production began, in the movie.

The Story: Darin Erstad withdraws from Dodgers manager running

MWAH Says: It’s a slow news weekend when the top two stories here are only tangentially related to Angels baseball. Erstad was named as one of four finalists for the Dodgers manager gig on Saturday, only to step out of the race later in the day. His heart is apparently still in Nebraska. Bud Black is still in the running, as are Gabe Kapler and Dave Roberts.

The Story: Josh Reddick an instant trade candidate

MWAH Says: There seem to be no shortage of options for the Angels to fill their vacancy in left field. Reddick’s name hasn’t come up in any rumors just yet, but history tells us he’s a cinch to be dealt. The A’s haven’t had a non-reliever make it to regular free agency—i.e. after the standard six years of service time—since Barry Zito in 2006. Seriously.

The Story: Offseason Outlook: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

MWAH Says: MLB Trade Rumors seems to believe the Angels will be on the lookout for starting pitching help on the open market this winter, which is a bit befuddling. Left field and third base are WAY bigger question marks than the rotation, which has like nine guys vying for five spots even with Sean Newcomb out of the picture.

The Story: Chad Hinshaw leads Solar Sox to 5-1 win

MWAH Says: The more Hinshaw hits in the AFL, the more Collin Cowgill starts looking like a non-tender candidate. Hinshaw went 2-for-4 with a double Saturday, and is now batting .364/.407/.527 in 13 games. He also went 2-for-4 in Friday’s 2-1 win.

The Story: Red Sox acquire Craig Kimbrel for four prospects

MWAH Says: The Padres got more for Kimbrel than they gave up to get him just eight months ago. That’s some pretty solid maneuvering by A.J. Preller. Not so much on the Braves’ part. Maybe don’t tie Melvin Upton to your best trade chip? Can’t wait for them to package Freddie Freeman with Nick Markakis so that Freeman’s price gets dragged down too.

The Story: Atlanta is shopping Freddie Freeman

MWAH Says: Well, I guess we know why they were so eager to part with Simmons. Braves ownership is trying to pull an Astros/Cubs and do an epic rebuild so they can pocket a ton of money when the new stadium opens. Wonder when they’ll realize they already had the young core those other teams spent years trying to cultivate.

The Story: Josh Hamilton undergoes another knee operation

MWAH Says: That’s two procedures for Hamilton since the season ended. He’s supposed to be all ready to go for spring training, but you never know with Josh. Rangers probably aren’t too concerned, as any production he provides them is gravy at this point. Hard to get too stressed with someone else is footing the bill.
