The January 29, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes Mike Trout getting the “honor” of being the No. 1 baseball card, the team getting shut out of a Top 100 prospects list (again), and more…
The Story: Fans pick Mike Trout to be Topps’ No. 1 card for 2016
MWAH Says: Two things I learned from this article: 1) Baseball cards are still being made; and 2) Topps numbers each one for some reason. I guess this is their way (or the fans’ way) of saying Mike Trout is the best/favorite baseball player, which is cool. Not really sure of the significance beyond that.
The Story: No Angels prospects on Baseball Prospectus’s Top 101 for 2016
MWAH Says: The Halos weren’t the only team to be shut out, thankfully, as the Marlins and Giants also missed the cut. However, this is the second time in three years the Angels have had no top 100 prospects. And the only reason it’s not three years in a row is because of last winter’s acquisition of Andrew Heaney. Not great, Bob. Sean Newcomb came in at No. 32 overall.
The Story: Phillies claim LHP Bobby LaFromboise off waivers from Angels
MWAH Says: Meh. Kinda sucks that the Halos are now short a potential LOOGY, but it’s never difficult to find another lefty with a pulse. Claimed from the Pirates back in December, LaFromboise was with the Halos for all of 37 days.
The Story: Angels add three players on minor-league deals
MWAH Says: RHP Yunesky Maya, LHP Jose Alberto Molina (no relation), and MINF Anthony Phillips have all joined the Angels organization. No word on whether any of their minor-league deals include an invite to Spring Training, but Maya’s probably does. He’s the only one of the trio with any MLB experience.
The Story: Dodgers, Howie Kendrick close to reuniting
MWAH Says: I guess their six GMs had a vote and decided they’d rather have Howie back at second than the compensatory draft pick another team signing him would give them. But if Kendrick becomes the team’s starting 2B, what of Chase Utley, Kiké Hernandez, and Alex Guerrero? Trade, maybe?
The Story: L.A. City Council votes to name street after Vin Scully
MWAH Says: Pretty cool thing. Any time you head up the hill to Dodgers Stadium now—for the Freeway Series, natch—you will be on Vin Scully Avenue.
