The March 8, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes the team’s top prospect moving to the back fields for the remainder of spring, a former top prospect getting close to game action, and more…
The Story: Taylor Ward, others reassigned to minor league camp
MWAH Says: No surprises in the first round of cuts. Ward will be accompanied to minor league camp by catchers Michael Strentz, Wade Wass, and Stephen McGee, and left-hander Tyler DeLoach. While their game time in Tempe was slim to nil, all got several weeks of instruction with big-league coaches, which will hopefully stick with them throughout the year. Ward will begin the year at Single-A Burlington.
The Story: Tyler Skaggs threw a bullpen Monday
MWAH Says: Scioscia said the session went “great” and that the next step is to have him throw live batting practice on Wednesday. At this point, Skaggs seems to be closer to game action than C.J. Wilson. Can’t decide if that’s good or bad. On the one hand, hooray young pitching. On the other hand, where does Wilson fit in then once he’s healthy? Do the Halos demote a (hopefully) successful Skaggs until they can find a trade partner for Wilson?
The Story: Cam Bedrosian spent winter playing catch with his dad
MWAH Says: Most of us have gone to our dads in tough times, but very few of us can boast a dad with a Cy Young award. Steve ‘Bedrock’ Bedrosian’s advice to his son this winter was to “have fun and trust it”, which is easier said than done. I’m still hopeful that Cam can turn things around, but it’s not going well so far this spring.
The Story: Rafael Ortega looking to get back on track with Angels
MWAH Says: Yet another “Player A hoping for a comeback” article. This seems to be the early theme of the 2016 season. Let’s pray some of these actually come to fruition. Ortega seems like a solid player, but I’m not sure a good first week of camp is worth releasing Craig Gentry. If Gentry isn’t the fourth outfielder come Opening Day, he’s likely not on the team. If Ortega isn’t, he can be stashed at Triple-A.
The Story: Starting pitching depth, ranked
MWAH Says: The Angels’ 2016 rotation might not have the highest ceiling, but they do have some of the best depth in baseball. The only rotations projected to get more WARP from their No. 6 & 7 starters are the Twins and Pirates.
The Story: The impact of wins, stadiums, and economies on ticket prices
MWAH Says: Interesting little study. It’s not adjusted for inflation, which seems weird, but still worth a gander.
