Halo Headlines: Weaver frustrated but determined; Rasmussen retires

The March 16, 2016 edition of Los Angeles Angels news includes Jered Weaver wishing an operation could fix his back issues, a young pitcher electing to walk away from baseball, and more…

The Story: Jered Weaver won’t get help from any doctors

MWAH Says: The spine specialist confirmed the “degenerative changes” diagnosis and iterated that the bulging disk on Weaver’s left side isn’t likely to be the cause of his velocity dip. That latter point feels pretty iffy given how a pitcher’s motion is a full body thing, but I’m not the doctor. Weaver will throw four innings on a minor-league game on Sunday and seems pretty set on being in the rotation come Opening Day.

The Story: LHP Rob Rasmussen announces retirement

MWAH Says: The 26-year-old was in Angels camp as a non-roster invitee and was one of only a few candidates for the team’s lefty specialist role. Rasmussen is reportedly hanging up his cleats so he can finish his business degree at UCLA. We wish him the best of luck.

The Story: Nate Smith, Victor Alcantara reassigned to minor-league camp

MWAH Says: The Tempe roster continues to be pared down. Given all the injuries in the rotation, I’m a little surprised Smith wasn’t given more time with the team. Though I guess it’s not like they can’t just bring him over from the back fields if they really need him.

The Story: A day in the life of Huston Street

MWAH Says: Man, there are routines and then there are ROUTINES. I can’t imagine having that level of self-determination every day. Sounds pretty miserable, to be honest, but appreciate the hard work.

The Story: New US laws could ease path for Cuban players

MWAH Says: Finally. The new amendments to the Cuban Assets Control Regulations (CACR) should allow MLB to eventually sign players directly from the island, but not until the Cuban government gives the OK on their end. President Obama is visiting the country next week, so maybe something can be worked out then.

The Story: The teams with the most dead money in MLB

MWAH Says: That the Angels nominally top this list is like the least surprising thing ever. I’d be shocked to find they didn’t have the most at any point in the last decade.
