Last night, the Phillies came home after a nine game interleague road trip where they went 3-6 and took on the Colorado Rockies. On the mound for the Rockies was Josh Outman, the former Phillies prospect and on the mound for the Phillies was Cole Hamels, who was seeking his 10th win of the season. The game started off with the Rockies getting a quick run in the first inning with Eric Young Jr. being the catalyst behind it. Then from the third to the fifth innings, the Phillies would score four unanswered runs.
Two of those four runs came off the bat of John Mayberry Jr. as he hit a two run home run in the fourth inning. That was Mayberry Jr.’s third home run in the last three games. The game would get close as the Rockies scored another run to make it 2-4 and then the Phillies would score three runs in the seventh inning to put the game away. Carlos Ruiz hit a two run home run to give nine home runs on the season. That is all the scoring Cole Hamels needed as he pitched eight innings, gave up six hits and two earned runs, and struck out seven. For the Rockies, Josh Outman only went four and one-third innings pitched, since Rockies manager Jim Tracy is going with a four man rotation. So for now on all of his starting pitchers will throw 75 pitches. If I am the Phillies hitters, I would work the count against all of these Rockies starting pitchers to get to their bullpen quicker.
Finally, something that caught my eye was that Jimmy Rollins was a classic leadoff hitter last night. In all four at bats, he got on base somehow. Rollins got two hits, scored three runs, and got walked twice. When Jimmy Rollins scores a run this Phillies’ offense runs more efficiently. The Phillies won last night’s game 7-2 over the Rockies. For tonight’s game on the mound for the Rockies it will be Alex White (2-5, 5.56 ERA) and on the mound for the Phillies it will be Joe Blanton (6-6, 4.93 ERA). Hopefully Joe Blanton can put a winning streak together after his last pitching performance versus the Minnesota Twins. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
