The big story for the last place Phillies all year has been, when and where will Cole Hamels be traded. Well we don’t know for a fact that he will be traded but there are plenty of teams interested in the 31 year old lefty. That list includes, The Rangers, The Red Sox, The Yankees, The Padres, The Cardinals, The Red Sox, The Astros, and The Cubs. I have put together some packages that the Phillies could receive for Hamels. I made my packages based off the facts that the Phillies are looking for star pitching and young MLB ready batters. So although you may go to one of these teams prospect list and see better prospects that I left off, we have to reasonable and realize that we are not going to get a team’s top 4 prospects for Hamels.
The Cubs: P Carl Edwards Jr, C Kyle Schwarber, OF Billy Mckinny/ Albert Almora. Add that the Phillies pay $25M and another player may be added.
The Dodgers: Straight up Hamels for P Julio Urias and low A hitter ( this isn’t likely). P Grant Holmes, OF Alex Verdugo, 2B Darnell Sweeney.
The Red Sox- Blake Swihart plus single A pitcher ( unlikely). P Brian Johnson, OF Manuel Margot, SS Devon Marrero.
Astros- P Vincent Velasquez, OF Brett Phillips, 1B AJ Reed/2B Tony Kemp( not ruling out the possible return of Domingo Santana)
The Yankees- OF Aaron Judge plus low A pitcher. C Gary Sanchez, P Ian Clarkin, 2B Robert Refsnyder.
The Rangers- straight up Hamels for 3B Joey Gallo plus PTBNL(unlikely). P Alex Gonzalez, OF Nick Williams, OF Ryan Cordell.
The Cardinals- the Cards are a tough one, aside from the fact that they may be hacking computers, their system doesn’t appeal to the Phils needs, their top 10 prospects are mostly young arms which is pretty much the complete opposite of what Ruben wants. I came up with this P Marco Gonzales, 2B Jacob Wilson.
The Padres- OF Rymer Liriano, P Cory Mazzoni, 3B Gabriel Quintana/1B Alex Dickerson.
Personally I would want the Cubs deal mostly because of Schwarber but I like the Rangers and Padres ones. Getting a guy like Aaron Judge, Blake Sweihart, and Joey Gallo is almost impossible in this situation and I’d rather get multiple prospects back. Say the Phils add Revere or Papelbon to the deal then obviously the return could increase but I doubt that will happen. The Phillies will have to eat most of Hamels’ contract to get the players I listed but that doesn’t seem to be a problem. Stay tuned to see if any of these deals happen in the next 2 weeks and comment your own packages.
