Happy Birthday Dan Marino!
One of the best pure passers in NFL History, and a Miami Dolphin for life, Marino was the face of the franchise, even long after his retirement from the game.
Although both of his coveted single season passing marks of 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns have been broken several times over, the record, which was set back in 1984, will forever be remembered as being done at a time when the NFL allowed defenses to A) hit the QB and B) play defense down the field.
Not to take away from the eventual record breakers, but at the time when Marino set his records, DB’s could do everything the Patriots corners did to Peyton’s wide receivers in Indianapolis (hence the rule change, aka The Ty Law Rule).
Despite never winning a Super Bowl, Marino’s greatness has never been questioned. He’s one of the 10 greatest quarterbacks of all-time, and before Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck, there was Dan Marino, the best pure passer in the game of football.
