Corey Hart inked a 1-year deal at the midpoint of the club’s offer and his contract request, or for $3.25 million…a healthy $1.25 million less than I predicted, according to JSOnline.com.
Also, new Brewers’ skipper Ken Macha has hinted that:
1. Yovani Gallardo is not likely to be the #1 guy in the rotation, due to his lack of experience, and,
2. He’s leaning towards Rickie Weeks and J.J. Hardy batting 1-2 in the order
I expected the Gallardo move, as it is way too much to put on a guy that missed most of his rookie season with an injury. The second announcement is not unusual, either, except that stating that Hardy will be the #2 hitter on the day that Corey Hart signs is kind of a stick in his eye. Still, the Crew jacked Hardy around last year–or should I say Ned Yost did–having Hardy hit in the #7 spot ahead of the pitcher, something that irked Hardy to no end…giving him the heads-up in Cactus League that the #2 spot is his to lose has got to help his confidence…not to mention taking off some of the pressure off of Hart.
Oh, and Eric Gagne signed a minor-league deal with the Brewers. Seems he approached Doug Melvin at the end of last year and admitted that he didn’t earn his $10 million. It will be interesting to see how much of a look they give him…odds are it could be Gagne’s swan song.
