Hartley, Moore Honored By The Big East

Maya Moore, left, and Bria Hartley cheer on the team late in the second half after both sat out the last couple of minutes. The University of Connecticut beat LSU in the final game of the World Vision Challenge at the Gampel Pavilion in Storrs Sunday afternoon by a score of 81 to 51.

The weekly Big East women’s basketball awards came out earlier on Monday and we find two members of the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team honored for their play over the weekend. Freshman point guard Bria Hartley was named the Big East Freshman of the Week for the second straight week while Maya Moore was named to the Weekly Honor Roll.

Hartley helped the Huskies go 3-0 in the World Vision Challenge over the weekend and averaged 14 points. 2.7 rebounds and five assists. She shot 59.4% (9-of-17) from three-point land.

In the win over Howard, Hartley had 16 points, four rebounds and six assists while in the win over Lehigh, she had 11 points and four assists. She closed out her weekend in the game against LSU by scoring 15 points and adding five assists. She had an assist-to-turnover ration of 15-9 over the three games as well.

Moore averaged 25 points and 8.3 rebounds over the weekend to be named to the Weekly Honor Roll. She became just the fourth Husky to gather over 1,000 rebounds in her career. Moore also needs 23 points to pass Tina Charles for first place on the all-time scoring list at UConn.

The UConn women are back in action on Thursday night when they’ll open up Big East play against the South Florida Bulls. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be covered locally here in Connecticut on CPTV.
