The Red Sox had the final game of the series with the Rays this afternoon with their ace Jon Lester on the mound vs. former Sox Erik Bedard. The Sox were looking to not only sweep the Rays, but also win their 7th straight game. Lester was absolutely dominant and the Sox cruised to another victory. We also saw the debut of a Alex Hassan and Garin Cecchini, who both got their first major league hit in the game. It was an all around great game.
The game wasn’t long before there was the first moment of drama in the game. In the 2nd inning Pedroia seemed livid with the strike zone of the home plate ump. It seems as if he kept jawwing about it in the dugout and was ejected after the inning. Pedroia was out of the game and Garin Cecchini who was just called up was suddenly in the lineup. The Sox scored their first runs of the night in the 4th inning. Gomes singled, Alex Hassan singled which was his first major league hit and the Herrera hit a sac fly to score Gomes. The Sox scored two more runs when Holt hit an RBI double to score Hassan and Bradley. Sox 3-0.
Three runs would be more than enough for Jon Lester who was just dealing. Lester pitched 7 strong innings and got 12 strikeouts in his outing. Lester left the mound after the 7th receiving a much deserved standing ovation from the Fenway crowd. Lester’s pitching line for the night was 112 pitches, 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB and 12 Ks. In the bottom of the inning the second Sox call-up got his first major league hit when Garin Cecchini hit an RBI double to score Brock Holt. Sox 4-0. Holt had a pretty amazing day at the plate himself. Holt went 4 for 4 with 4 doubles and a walk. He’s definitely made the case that he should remain with the team once Drew is recalled. Mujica came out and pitched a stressful, but a scoreless 8th inning before handing the ball over to Koji Uehara. Koji had his usual 1-2-3 inning and the Sox not only swept the Rays, but won their 7th game in a row.
