Here we go again….the University of Wisconsin admissions department vs. the football team.
If you’re one to pay attention to recruiting, then you are likely well aware of how difficult it has been in the past four or five years for the Badgers football program to get transfer players in to the fold. Often times admissions denies the transfer at the final moment or delays admission.
However, none of that stopped one of two transfer visitors for the annual spring game from committing to UW. The Badgers hosted Hawaii cornerback Nick Nelson, and following the game he reportedly committed to the UW program.
He’s a player very familiar with the Badgers, having been a part of the Rainbow Warriors team that came to Camp Randall last season. In that game, Nelson finished with eight tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and one pass defensed.
On the season, Nelson finished eighth on the team in tackles (53) and had 15 pass breakups with one forced fumble as well.
He also was a major player on special teams, especially as a punt returner. It’s an area the Badgers clearly have a need at and could be his biggest role on the team early on in his time while he adjusts to cornerback at this level.
Nelson would have to sit out the 2016 season due to NCAA transfer rules, then would have two years of eligibility.
All of that is again contingent on the admissions department allowing his transfer to go through — a process that is far from a perfect science and more like a complete hot mess.
Having Nelson on board would help solidify a secondary that will see four-year starter Sojourn Shelton graduate following this upcoming season and a whole lot of youth and inexperience around the position as a whole.
