Heard Around the ‘Shoe – 10/21/2016

Welcome to your tri-weekly look at all things Ohio State recruiting. Let’s get started!

5-Star Safety to Make only Four Officials:

Probably the highest target remaining on the recruiting board for 2017 is 5-star safety out of Texas, Jeffrey Okudah. Okudah talked to Scout.com ($) Thursday night about his plans for the rest of the recruiting process. He has already visited Oklahoma and Georgia on officials, and plans on making Florida State on October 29th his 3rd.

“I’ll probably take four, the last one being Ohio State,” Okudah said, “for the Michigan game or the Nebraska game. It’s not set, but it’ll be one of those.”

With Okudah enrolling early, it looks like these will probably be the last two official visits before he makes his decision public. While it has long been thought that Okudah is all Buckeye, recruiting is never over until the kid signs his letter of intent.  Okudah has a 77% crystal ball projection to Ohio State with 26 projections in. He would join a backfield of Shaun Wade, Marcus Williamson, Isaiah Pryor and Amir Riep.

Un-Happy Valley?:

There will be a lot of recruits in Happy Valley this weekend to watch the Buckeyes take on the Nittany Lions. Quite a few of them are both Buckeye and Lion targets for the next three recruiting cycles. One of the big targets that will be on hand is 4-star wide receiver Jaylen Harris. Harris announced his top 5 back in August and they included Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee, Michigan State and Alabama. Harris visited Ohio State unofficially back on October 8th when the Buckeyes took on Indiana and plans to take other visits later this year.

With wide receivers Trevon Grimes and Tyjon Lindsey already in the fold, and a dwindling scholarship number will there be enough room for Harris if he wants to become a Buckeye? All the signs I have heard point to yes, if he wants in the class they will make room for him. With the lack of production from the Buckeye wide receivers this year, the Buckeyes need to bring in as many playmakers as possible to help on the offensive side of the ball.

Jackson Carman Renaissance Man:

In a 247Sports article written by Steve Wiltfong profiling 5-star offensive lineman Jackson Carman, we learn quite a lot about the person that Carman is off the field. He plays five musical instruments, a blossoming artist, enjoys the outdoors and is a very social person.

He is also a dominate force on the football field, as he is ranked the 17th best player in the class of 2018 and the #1 player in the state of Ohio. Carman has over 30 scholarship offers to date from all of the top programs in the country, but it is Ohio State that is standing out.

“My relationship with the coaches, Coach (Urban) Meyer and Coach (Greg) Stud(rawa), it’s been great talking to them almost every day,” Carman said. “I’m really close with them and they feel like family. College football is a lot like a business and sometimes coaches act like business owners, and Ohio State coaches do not. They make me feel like family.”

He has visited Ohio State a few times and I imagine that he will get himself back on campus again. He is traveling to Alabama this weekend and he has already made stops in Ann Arbor, East Lansing and South Bend. He has a 100% crystal ball projection to the Buckeyes from 11 analysts, but does not seem to be in any hurry to make a decision.

Another Season Done for Buckeye Recruit:

It appears that Tyjon Lindsey’s return to Bishop Gorman has been cut short as he announced today on twitter that his senior season is over. He is going to undergo season ending surgery at some point to fix his injured knee as he spoke to MyLVSports.com.

“I got the news today,” Lindsey said. “If I played (the season) out I might hurt it even more and I might actually tear a ligament. I don’t want to risk anything right now so my decision is to try and get the surgery as soon as possible.”

Lindsey becomes the second Buckeye wide receiver commit to have his season shortened by a knee injury as 5-star Trevon Grimes was also lost for the season with a torn ACL he suffered playing against Bishop Gorman. Both Grimes and Lindsey will be rehabbing hard before reporting to Ohio State and attempting to see action in their freshman seasons.
