Heard Around the ‘Shoe – 10/26/2016

Welcome to your tri-weekly look at all things Ohio State recruiting. Let’s get started!

2018 Tight End to visit for Michigan Game:

While the Buckeyes look to wrap up their 2017 recruiting class, they are turning their attention to the 2018 class hoping to add to the two commitments they have already in Brian Snead and Emory Jones. One of the targets on the Buckeye recruiting board is 4-star tight end Mustapha Muhammad from Missouri City, Texas. Muhammad currently lists 28 offers from the likes of Clemson, LSU, Michigan, Texas A&M and Alabama. He has already made several unofficial visits this season to Texas A&M, Texas, TCU and most recently Oklahoma. He spoke with 11W Tuesday and said that he has set up an unofficial visit to come see the Buckeyes when they play Michigan on November 26th.

“[I’ll be there for] That Team Up North game,” Muhammad said, referring to the Nov. 26 matchup with Michigan. “I can’t wait to experience the heated rivalry in Columbus.”

Muhammad has seen the Buckeyes play in person this year, as he was in attendance when the Buckeyes traveled to Norman to take on the Sooners. He plans on announcing a top 10 after the season ends.

The Buckeyes will look to take one or possibly two tight ends in this class after most likely skipping the position in the 2017 class.

Emory Jones – All-American:

Speaking of the 2018 class, 5-star quarterback and Buckeye commit Emory Jones got some good news yesterday as he was invited to play in the Army All-American game next January. The game will take place in San Antonio, Texas on January 6th, 2018. Jones joins Trevor Lawrence and USC commit Matt Corral as the quarterbacks that have been selected to play in the 2018 version of the game.

Some other Buckeye targets have been invited as well including defensive end Xavier Thomas, running back Zamir White, running back Lorenzo Lingard and linebacker Palaie Gaoteote.

Some Fertile Recruiting down in Texas:

Back in July the Buckeyes offered 5-star cornerback Anthony Cook out of Houston, Texas. He spoke with Greg Powers at Scout.com ($) about his recruitment and who is standing out right now.

“Ohio State, Clemson, TCU, Texas and Georgia,” Cook said of offers that have grabbed his attention. “Those were offers that I immediately thought ‘wow this is real’.”

He doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to make a commitment as he talks about program stability.

“I am definitely glad I still got some time, because some of the guys that have committed to schools, their coaches are leaving and stuff like that, it has been crazy, so I am glad I have enough time to see it all through.”

He hasn’t been on any visits so far, but will be making the trek north to watch the Buckeyes when they take on Michigan on November 26th, which is shaping up to not only be a great game, but a great recruiting weekend as well.

“It will be a real big one. We are going to be looking forward to getting out there. I am just looking forward to seeing the campus but there, the environment and I have been talking to a few of the coaches and they said the environment was like nothing else.”

2018 Offensive Tackle Picking up Steam:

In early September the Buckeyes gave an offer to 4-star offensive guard Cleveland Reed out of Fort Meade, Florida. Reed is a 6-foot-4, 280 pound junior that lists 10 offers to date. He spoke to Scout.com’s ($) Corey Bender about his recruitment up to this point.

“Recruiting has been going good, man” Reed said. “The latest offer is from Ohio State, but I know more are going to come once the season is over. I would have to say North Carolina, Ohio State and Florida are showing the most interest.

He went on to say that he speaks to those schools almost on a daily basis. What does he think of the Buckeyes and their program?

“Ohio State has a really good team, and they produce offensive linemen just like Alabama. With coach Urban Meyer, it doesn’t really get bigger than Ohio State, besides Alabama.

“My dream school is Alabama, but I’m trying to go somewhere I can play early. I really like Ohio State a lot.”

I’m not sure if he is insinuating that the Buckeyes have an immediate need on the offensive line by that last comment, but he is still two years away from playing so there is a long way to go before that happens.

He intends on visiting the Buckeyes at some point down the road.

New York Wide Out Visiting for Northwestern This Weekend:

Paul Woods, a currently unranked wide receiver out of Buffalo, New York will be in attendance Saturday as the Buckeyes host the Wildcats. Woods has already visited the Buckeyes a few times, the last being Friday Night Lights back in July. He performed really well during the camp and many came away impressed. He spoke to Scout.com’s Bill Greene after the camp about his experience.

“I had a great experience at Ohio State the other day, and there were a lot of great players there,” Woods stated. “The coaches thought I did really well, and I was happy with how I did overall.”

“They want me to stay in contact with them and get them my film from the first few games,” he added. “Ohio State is my dream school and I was here for camp earlier this summer.”

He currently only holds one offer from Boston College at the moment, but that will likely change especially if the Buckeyes get in early. He will be one to watch as he continues to build his high school resume this season and next.
