Heat defeat Spurs – 5 Notes of Interest

After outscoring the Miami Heat 24-9 in the second quarter on Friday evening in Las Vegas, the San Antonio Spurs were handed their second straight loss in S.L. play as the Heat used a 28-14 fourth quarter to defeat the Spurs 83-78.CJ

The marquee matchup was with two sophomores on each squad as the Spurs’ Cory Joseph was set to defend and try to score on Heat sophomore Norris Cole.

Joseph struggled in the game as he finished with nine points, on 4-of-11 shooting, dished six assists, grabbed three rebounds, stole the ball twice, committed five personal fouls, and finished with 10-turnovers.

Cole himself didn’t too well either as it took him 12-shot attempts to score 11-points, but in the end his team came out with the victory.

Five Notes of Interest

  • James Anderson, whom is still trying to gain some attention for a training camp invite with any NBA team, finished the game with 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting, but he did grab seven rebounds, although his four turnovers didn’t help in him garnering attention.
  • JaMcychal Green started and finished with 10 points, while Tyler Wilkerson led the Spurs in scoring off the bench with 12 points. As I’ve written over the week, Wilkerson has to be a lock to get an invite from a team due to his consistent productive play game-by-game.
  • French center Alexis Ajinca logged 16 minutes and had his most productive game thus far: six points, six rebounds, three steals, one block, and two turnovers.
  • With Ajinca logging 16-minutes, Ryan Richards didn’t get a second of playing time along with former starter Luke Zeller. The last time Richards played minimum minutes; he bounced back with a heavy dose of minutes. You might be able to expect the same on Saturday as the Spurs wrap up Summer League against the Dallas Mavericks.
  • One last interesting note, Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express News tweeted during the game that Summer League head coach Jacque Vaughn was missing from the sideline. An Austin Toros assistant coach was the primary coach on Friday. Though there’s no such report, speculation could be that Vaughn might have been meeting with the Orlando Magic, whom he’s rumored to be the favorite to land their head coaching vacancy.
