Heisman Winner in Awe of Yankees

While most of college football's finest are in Indianapolis playing NFL Bingo, arguably its best player, Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston, was in Tampa…taking on the New York Yankees.

While most of the sportsworld was already impressed with the quarterback when he became just the fifth athlete to win both college football's top individual award and play collegiate baseball in the same year, it was the 20-year-old that was in awe of his opponent on Tuesday.

"I was kind of starstruck. I just kept telling him it was an honor to meet him…and it really was," Winston said after meeting Derek Jeter. "I guess it's how little kids feel sometimes when they talk to me. They can be kind of speechless. And that's how I was with Mr. Jeter. He was my favorite, by far, just because he's such a leader to that organization. He's the face of that organization. And I used to be a shortstop back in my day. My favorite number was 2. He's been a huge influence on my life."

Maybe it was nerves (I doubt it), but the two-sport star went hitless in his two at bats…grounding out in the sixth and striking out in the eighth.  The Yankees would end up on the winning side of the contest, downing Florida State 8-3.

And in case you were wondering, Tuesday's exhibition game was the first time Winston was on the losing end of anything since June (241 days!) when the Seminoles fell to Indiana in the College World Series.
