Early tonight on ESPN, it was announced that outfielder Odubel Herrera will represent the Philadelphia Phillies in the All Star Game for the National League squad.
Herrera, 24, is a former Rule 5 draft selection of the Phillies and is in his second major league season. The center fielder is hitting .303 this season with 10 homers and 32 RBIs. Herrera’s most impressive stat of the season is his 43 walks which is 15 more than he had all of last season. Herrera has a .390 On Base Percentage which is top 10 in the NL.
This will be Herrera’s first all star appearance, he will come off the bench in the game, but nonetheless it is a great honor for someone who was in double A less than two years ago.
Herrera was selected to the game over the likes of Ryan Bruan and Giancarlo Stanton. Chances are this won’t be his last appearance as Herrera looks like he will continue to grow as a player.
The All Star game will be held next Tuesday, July 12, at Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres.
