A few days ago, journeyman wing player Gerald Green, who is known for legitimately flying in the air, is expected to sign a 1 year contract with the C’s, his former team that drafted him back in 2005. This gives a veteran presence in the second rotation and Green should help the second unit in points and Sportscenter dunks. Averaging 10 points in his career that has been lengthy yet all over the country, Green would feel right at home and should deliver.
In other news besides Green, backup center Tyler Zeller is expected to sign a 2 year 16 million dollar deal to keep him with the second unit of the C’s and if needed, to start in place of a starter being injured. Zeller has a high IQ and runs the floor efficiently when he gets his minutes. When the C’s were down a few games this year, Zeller jumpstarted the C’s with his energy and his high efficient shots and got the C’s back to where they needed to be and finished the games strong.
The Celtics also agreed to rookie contracts with G Demetrius Jackson from Notre Dame and F Ben Bentil of Providence. Both players participated in Summer League. Jackson averaged 5 points and 2 rebounds throughout Summer League and Bentil averaged 4.3 points and roughly 4 boards a game through Summer League.
The Celtics have a very crowded backcourt and changes are prone to happen in the near future as Coach Brad Stevens has some tough decisions ahead of him with all of the guards and those who can run the point. Stevens has Smart, Bradley and Thomas as locks but Jackson, Hunter, Holland, Rozier, and James Young are also hanging around. Young is pointed out as the one to leave the C’s but if he is, I’m expecting him to get picked up fairly quickly.
Forwards are also taking up a good chunk of the roster as Bentil, Jaylen Brown, Nader, Mickey, Crowder, Johnson, Olynyk, Zizic and Jerebko are fighting for spots. Al Horford is a lock at Center and international draft pick Guerschon Yabusele is playing overseas this year. Let’s see how all this plays out in the near future for Brad Stevens.
